The Importance of Upgrading Security on a Security Door

Security doors are built with strength and durability in mind. However, there are ways to enhance the security features of a door. Every business will have differing security requirements and we understand that sometimes that means adapting things from the locking mechanism to including vision panels.

We offer a large range of security enhancements for our steel doors, this guide is designed to help you understand the more common adaptions that many of our customers choose to make.

Security Enhancements for Steel Security Doors

From choosing the correct lock, to automatic door closers, often there are several high level security requirements that businesses may hold.

Enhanced Cylinder Locks

The choice of security cylinder that you choose to install has a direct impact on the security level of your door.

A standard cylinder will typically be suitable for the majority of places, only needing a key to open and close the door, in some high security areas a Kite Marked Security Cylinder might be more appropriate. A Kite Marked cylinder is certified by the British Standards Institute for offering a higher security against potential forced entry. They are resistant to drilling, snapping and picking for additional security for your property.

For areas that require frequent internal access, a cylinder and turn option might be ideal. They offer the option to turn a lock from the inside to the correct position to lock a door. This keyless locking option means that users can easily lock the premises from the inside, so that it is easy for employees to keep a building secure.

Door Closers

A door closer is crucial for maintaining security in busy areas. A standard door closer will ensure that once a door has been opened, it will close automatically. In turn, this helps to reduce the chance of accidental or unauthorised entry.

Door closers are manufactured with different power ratings, this doesn't imply the strength of a slam though. Instead it gives an indication of the door that they are designed to support. For example, a door closer with a power rating of 3 would safely suit a door up to 60kg. As steel security doors can be a little heavier than the standard door, it is important to pay attention to the door that your closer is being used on and make sure that they are compatible.

Vision Panels

Vision panels are commonly used on steel doors for secure monitoring. Using impact resistant glass, vision panels allow occupants to see outside without compromising the security of their door. In environments such as retail spaces or an office, visibility is a priority and so a vision panel will often prove to be beneficial.

Ventilation grills are another way of facilitating extra visibility without compromising on security. Unlike a vision panel, a ventilation grill allows for increased airflow through steel security doors. For areas such as data centres or storage rooms this improved airflow can be essential.

Specialty Hardware

While the above are the main security changes someone might make to their security doors, there is also additional hardware that might prove to be beneficial.

For example, a digital combination lock might be ideal for a business where access restrictions need to be made frequently, or an accessible handle might need to be added to a toilet door. You could even choose to add a peep hole for if you don't need as much visibility as a vision panel provides.

There are many different types of hardware available to meet unique and changing business requirements - to get a better idea of what you might need, explore our accessories page or get in touch with a member of our team.
